Tell us a little bit about you….
Hi there, I’m Dana. My husband and I were married last spring. Soon after we uprooted our life and essentially downsized to our little beach bungalow. We have settled into a simpler way of living with our beagle by our side. We love fixing up our house and bike riding along the bay.
I have always found gardening and painting therapeutic. Lately I have added cooking to that list. However, my absolute favorite thing to do is hit the road in search of new treasures.
Many weekends I am in the shop in Doylestown, PA where I offer free milk paint demonstrations to those eager to learn what the paint is all about. I love meeting with customers and hearing about their projects. I am excited to announce that we will be retailing milk paint in a second location in Cape May, NJ where we’ll also offer free demonstrations this summer.
Why did you start your business?
It started as an idea and hobby so long ago. In fact, it was almost always present in my life. I was born an entrepreneur, collector and maker. One of my earliest memories is of picking dandelions and selling them door-to-door in my neighborhood. Oddly enough I went on to pursue a Bachelors degree in Ornamental Horticulture.
My business has grown and evolved to encompass all of my passions including vintage & found materials, painting and gardening. My family has been a huge asset in developing and growing the business from a hobby to a living. Overall, I like to inspire people to rethink what they have. We can all make something beautiful and keep things out of landfills. I also like to support other small businesses and makers and carry lines such as Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. I love what I do. It rarely feels like work!
Where do you find inspiration?
I truly am an old soul who’s inspired by things of the past. I like to look at the authentic colors and wear on old pieces to use as a guide. My bedroom set is a French provincial family heirloom. Somewhere along the way, decades ago, it was actually updated with milk paint! It is inspiring to look at the way it has worn over time and how the gilding was applied around the drawers. I have used it as guide on several current pieces and have no intention of redoing the set anytime soon. I love the authenticity of it.
What is your favorite thing to collect?
Perhaps it would be easier to list what I don’t collect! I’ve had to edit my collections lately but my top two include vintage blue/green mixing bowls. Let’s call them Kitchen Scale mixing bowls. And yellow McCoy planters. Let’s call them Mustard Seed Yellow McCoy planters. They’re both very springy and on display around my house currently.
What is your favorite MMSMP color and why?
This is a tough one! I love color and they are all so vivid and beautiful. This week it is Apron Strings. Who knows what it will be next week but overall I’d have to say Kitchen Scale. It is most popular in my store and it also seems to align well with the color of my own brand.
