CONNECT WITH CAROLYN
In November 2012, I was looking for a paint line to feature in my newly opened antique shop. A friend and fellow shop owner told me about Miss Mustard Seed and encouraged me to carry the products. My shop was opened for three reasons: our village needed a rebirth of the downtown area, I needed a purpose after 37 years in education, and my son needed a position while job hunting. I painted everyday in my little shop and being one of the only two retailers in Ohio, I enjoyed immediate success. People liked Marian’s story and the soft colors of the milk paint. After 18 months in business we moved to a larger store in the same town. A group of female business owners formed a partnership called Market and Main Business Partners. We have special events every month to encourage folks to shop local. This week we have a Cupcake Crawl. A free cupcake for a small donation to our Community Foundation and a fun evening shopping are on the agenda for July 17. Our shop is called Black Dog in honor of our 21 year old lab who passed in 2012. This dog was so special as she was my son’s sidekick during his illness and recovery from a brain tumor. My son is my IT guy and PR person. He doesn’t paint but he sure knows a lot about our milk paint! My favorite color is Apron Strings right now. I have also painted my bathroom cupboards, end tables and ceiling fans in my home. I believe you must have a passion about what you do. I found my business and paints rewarding and creative. Our little village is developing into a thriving retail area and Miss Mustard Seed has played an active role in its recovery.
